2 cups grated coconut
1/2 cup roasted chana dal
5-6 dried red chilies
1/4 teaspoon asafoetida
Salt, to taste
1 teaspoon tamarind paste (optional)
1 tablespoon coconut oil
In a pan, dry roast grated coconut over medium heat until it turns golden brown in color.
In the same pan, dry roast roasted chana dal until it turns golden brown in color.
In a small pan, heat coconut oil over low heat and fry dried red chilies until they become crispy.
Add the roasted coconut, roasted chana dal, fried red chilies, asafoetida, and salt to a blender or food processor and grind to a coarse powder.
If using tamarind paste, add it to the blender and pulse a few times to mix.
Transfer the thenga chammanthi podi to an airtight container and store in a cool, dry place.
