Thenga Chammanthi podi, Roasted Coconut Chutney powder is a classical south Indian spice powder or condiment made with roasted coconut. It needs no introduction to those familiar with Kerala cuisine. It It is an ideal condiment for breakfast recipes like idli, dosa and upma as a side dish. It can be used as a side dish for curd rice and rasam rice.

This Chutney powder is made with Coconut, Red Chilli, Urad dal, Channa dal, Curry leaves and almost all spices. All these contents are roasted in a particular way with appropriate proportion makes the powder tasty and aromatic with a golden brown color. It has a longer shelf life if we store it in air tight containers.

Thenga chammanthi podi is a delicious and aromatic coconut chutney powder from Kerala, India. Here's a recipe for making it at home:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups grated coconut
  • 1/2 cup roasted chana dal
  • 5-6 dried red chilies
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon tamarind paste (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

Instructions:

  1. In a pan, dry roast grated coconut over medium heat until it turns golden brown in color.
  2. In the same pan, dry roast roasted chana dal until it turns golden brown in color.
  3. In a small pan, heat coconut oil over low heat and fry dried red chilies until they become crispy.
  4. Add the roasted coconut, roasted chana dal, fried red chilies, asafoetida, and salt to a blender or food processor and grind to a coarse powder.
  5. If using tamarind paste, add it to the blender and pulse a few times to mix.
  6. Transfer the thenga chammanthi podi to an airtight container and store in a cool, dry place.

Thenga chammanthi podi is a versatile condiment that can be used as a side dish or an accompaniment to many South Indian dishes. To use, mix the podi with some water or coconut oil to make a thick paste and serve.
