Njavara rice is the unique rice rops grown only in Kerala, especially in Palakkad.

Navara rice has the properties to rectify the basic ills affecting the circulatory, respiratory as well as the digestive system. This rice has been used traditionally effectively in the Ayurvedic system of medicine, specifically in treatments like Panchakarma.

This rice is of two types, the white glumed (husked) and black glumed.  Ashtangahridayam, the 12th century Ayurvedic book,  describes the white Navara as medicinally superior but the black glumed variety seems to be preferred by medical practitioners these days.

Navara is used in Navarakizhi, a special Ayurvedic treatment from Kerala's traditional medicine used for curing neuromuscular disorders. The rice cooked in a extraction of the herb, Sida (Sida rectusa. Lin), to which cow milk has been added, makes the body supple, removes stiffness of joints, cleanses the body channels, and improves blood circulation. This is called as 'karkidakakanji', which is traditionally consumed as a replenishing drink during monsoon and is effective in curing fatigue.
